COVID-19, caused by the novel SARS-CoV-2 virus, has affected millions of Americans. Multiple vaccines have been developed with more expected for approval in the future. Currently, the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program does not provide compensation for persons who suffer injury from these vaccines. However, there is compensation available for persons who suffer injury from countermeasures given to combat the COVID-19 virus. The Countermeasures Injury Compensation Program (“CICP”) is a government-funded program created by the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act (“PREP Act”) and managed by the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services to compensate families who have lost a loved one as a direct result of receiving a “covered countermeasure” in connection with COVID-19 treatment.

This countermeasures fund provides compensation for:

3. Death benefit

Only a “Covered Countermeasure” will be considered an eligible treatment under the CICP. Covered Countermeasures include prescription drugs or devices used to treat COVID-19.
