Rotavirus Vaccine Information
Rotavirus vaccine is a vaccine used to protect against rotavirus infections, which are the leading cause of severe diarrhea among young children. The vaccines prevent 15–34% of severe diarrhea in the developing world and 37–96% of severe diarrhea in the developed world. Rotavirus spreads easily among infants and young children. The virus can cause severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, fever and abdominal pain. The first dose of either vaccine should be given before a child is 15 weeks of age. Children should receive all doses of rotavirus vaccine before they turn 8 months old. Both vaccines are given by putting drops in the child’s mouth. Children who get rotavirus disease can become dehydrated and may need to be hospitalized. Rotavirus vaccines have been frequently connected with intussusception (a medical term for the obstruction of the intestine) and anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction)
The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program may provide compensation for intussusception.
